Myanmar junta pardons more than 23,000 prisoners

Apr 17, 2021 22:13 IST | By AP

Myanmar's junta on Saturday announced it pardoned and released more than 23,000 prisoners to mark the new year holiday.

It wasn't immediately clear if they included pro-democracy activists who were detained in the wake of the February coup.

Reportedly the military pardoned 23,047 prisoners, including 137 foreigners who will be deported from Myanmar.

There were emotional scenes outside Insein prison in Yangon as relatives were reunited with released prisoners.

Among those walking out to freedom were Paing Ye Thu and Zayar Lwin, members of the Peacock Generation Thangyat troupe.
