Mothers 'unlikely' to pass Covid-19 to newborn: Lancet study

Jul 25, 2020 10:30 IST

According to a new study, published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, mothers infected with Covid-19 are 'unlikely' to pass it on to the baby during childbirth. Researchers tested 120 babies at three hospitals across New York and none of them tested positive for Covid-19 after being born to infected mothers. Some of them were breastfed and most of them were tested negative again a week later. Experts believe that these results are reassuring, however, larger trials are needed to ascertain the risk of transmission of Covid-19 from mother to the newborn child. Researchers cautioned that new mothers must take all precautions like wearing a mask while breastfeeding and washing their hands frequently.
