  • Messi likely to accept a 50% pay cut in his new contract
  • Messi's previous contract expired in June & he is currently a free agent

Reports from Spain suggest that Lionel Messi is likely to extend his stay at Barcelona, as he is set to sign a new 5-year contract with the Spanish football giants. However, the Argentine is set to take a 50% pay cut.

Messi, Barca's all-time top scorer and appearance maker, technically ended his 21-year association with the club last month and is currently a free agent after his previous contract expired. Interestingly, the new deal will take him to the age of 39.

Barcelona has been trying to reduce their wage bill in order to keep Messi, and stay within La Liga's strict financial control rules.
