Man seeks help to find oxygen for grandfather, UP police files case against him

Apr 28, 2021 17:19 IST | By Editorji News Desk

A young man found himself named in a criminal case after he sought help on Twitter to find oxygen cylinder for his grandfather. Shashank Yadav has been booked by Amethi police on charges of circulating rumour “with intent to cause fear or alarm whereby any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against the public tranquility”.

Shashank on Monday tagged actor Sonu Sood and said he needs help to find an oxygen cylinder. He did not mention any other details. His friend Ankit however sent a message to journalist Arfa Khanum Sherwani seeking help on Shashank's behalf.

Sherwani then posted the message on Twitter asking for any leads and also tagged Amethi MP Smriti Irani. The MP responded to the tweet and informed that she had tried calling Shashank but he didn't pick up. Sherwani then tweeted that Shashank's grandfather had passed away.

Amethi Police, however, on Tuesday replied to Shashank and Sherwani’s tweet saying that the grandfather was not a Covid-19 patient and nor had he been prescribed oxygen therapy. Neither Shashank nor Arfa Khanum Sherwani’s message mentioned that the old man had Covid-19.  The police charged him with spreading rumours on social media and said it was not only condemnable but also a crime.

The FIR against Shashank Yadav comes days after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath claimed that there is no shortage of oxygen in the state and directed police to take action against those who he claimed spread rumours on social media
