The extension of lockdown comes a week after a total lockdown of seven days was imposed in Amravati city and Achalpur town on February 21. Meanwhile, Anjangaon Surji village has been declared a containment zone. Mumbai, which was once a Covid hotspot of the state, has also started to witness a slight increase in daily cases, recording over 1,000 daily infections for the past three days.

India's overall tally reached 13.53 million, surpassing Brazil's 13.45 million cases, according to data compiled by Reuters. The United States led the global tally with 31.2 million cases. Deaths in India stood at 904, taking the total to 170,179, data showed. The new wave, known to have increased transmissibility, has decreased the recovery rate of the country which currently stands at over 90 per cent.

According to the Ministry of Health, as on Friday morning, there are 1,18,46,652 confirmed coronavirus cases in India, of which 4,21,066 are active cases.

Delhi broke all records in the number of Covid-19 cases recorded in a 24-hour span, with 10,774 fresh infections and 48 deaths on Sunday.
