Legal provisions used against freedom of press: Editors Guild

Nov 22, 2020 21:42 IST

Calling it a reflection of the larger threats to freedom of speech in the country, the Editors Guild of India has expressed concerned over the police case against Patricia Mukhim. The Shilong Times editor has been booked over a Facebook post which allegedly 'incited communal tension' between the tribal and the non tribal community in the state. Taking Patricia's case, the Guild pointed out how easily legal provisions were being used against free speech and free press when the prime responsibility is 'to question the affairs of the government and report information'. A Padma Shree awardee, Patrica had resigned as a member of the Guild in protest against its 'complete silence' when the Meghalaya High Court refused to quash the police complaint against her.
