Lead exposure linked to Alzheimer’s disease, find Indian scientists

Jan 17, 2020 13:01 IST

Lead exposure may lead to Alzheimer’s, a progressive disease that destroys memory and other critical mental functions, scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research-led National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR-NIN) have established through laboratory studies. Scientists shared that maternal exposure to lead during pregnancy could lead to higher risk and early onset of Alzheimer’s disease in later life of the child. Scientists also studied the therapeutic potential of natural compounds such as catechins, found in foods like green tea, apples, cherries and pears. They that these compounds do have potential preventive properties and could have a protective effect in lead induced Alzheimer’s disease.
