Opposition parties including the Congress, AIMIM, TMC created ruckus in the Lok Sabha, demanding that the Triple Talaq Bill be sent to the select committee. The politically sensitive bill seeks to make the practice of instant triple talaq among Muslims a penal offence. Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad countered the opposition, saying the bill is meant to protect rights of Muslim women. "20 Islamic nations have banned Triple talaq, then why can’t a secular nation like India? This bill is not against any faith or religion. It’s about justice and equality for women", he said.
