In a unique way to promote social distancing, the panchayat authorities of a village in Alappuzha in Kerala have asked residents to use umbrellas. The motto of the Thanneermukkom Grama Panchayat is 'open it, come rain, shine or pandemic'. The authorities have taken it upon themselves to distribute umbrellas, some for free and some at a subsidised rate, to ensure everyone follows social distancing. They believe, two open umbrellas that are not touching each other will ensure a 1-metre distance between people. The idea was casually suggested by Kerala's Finance Minister TM Thomas Isaac. It is now mandatory to use umbrellas in 23 wards of the panchayat.
