The Kerala government is planning to supply minimum liquor to heavy alcoholics as per a doctor's prescription during the nationwide Covid-19 lockdown. The development came after five people in Kerala committed suicide and more than 25 were admitted in de-addiction centres after they could not source liquor during the lockdown. While briefing the media, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the government move is to avoid suicides. He added that the excise department has been asked to suggest modalities. Kerala has around 1.6 million alcoholics who consume liquor on a regular basis, of them, 45% are heavy drinkers with withdrawal symptoms.
