K'taka HC: 'Unbecoming of Indian women' to sleep after rape

While granting anticipatory bail to a rape accused, the Karnataka High Court on Monday said that it was ‘unbecoming of an Indian woman’ to fall asleep after being raped and ‘that is not the way Indian women react when they are ravished’. In a bizarre judgement blaming the rape victim, Justice Krishna S Dixit observed that the woman knew the accused and voluntarily sat in his car having consumed drinks. As she did not raise any alarm while getting in the car, adding that just the 'serious nature' of the crime cannot be the sole criteria to deny liberty to the accused.
