Japan’s ruling party is reportedly looking to urge the government to restrict the use of Chinese apps like TikTok, following India’s ban of 59 such apps and Washington’s repeated threats. This comes amid growing concerns that the Bytedance-owned teenage sensation and other apps are being used to collect personal data for the Chinese government. Japan is looking to implement tighter controls on the handling of sensitive information, which according to national broadcaster NHK, could also see restrictions on Chinese-developed banking systems that use AI for tasks like evaluating loan applications.
