International Day of Yoga 2021: ‘Yoga for well-being’

International Day of Yoga 2021:

Since the declaration made on December 11 in 2014, by the United Nations General Assembly, June 21st has annually been celebrated as the International Day of Yoga.

Originated in India, Yoga is known as an age-old tradition that helps achieve physical, mental and spiritual harmony. The day aims to “raise awareness about the many benefits of practicing yoga.”

This year the day is marked by the theme, “Yoga for well-being.” The day comes at a time when people the world over are suffering at the hands of the pandemic. Apart from affecting the physical health of people, the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions have affected the mental health of people. 

People have taken up Yoga in order to stay healthy and be able to fight anxiety and depression. As expressed by the United Nations in a statement, yoga is "playing a significant role in the psycho-social care and rehabilitation of COVID-19 patients in quarantine and isolation."
