<p>Three months ago, National Anti-Doping Agency officials showed up at a Delhi state meet race at the Jawahralal Nehru Stadium.<br><br>Upon seeing them, racers meant to participate took off, barring one. The athlete ran alone, claiming he had nothing to hide.<br><br>And now, The Indian Express has reported that the lone sprinter in question has also returned a positive on a drug test.<br><br>The report states that the test was conducted on September 26, the day of the race.<br><br>Lalit Kumar, the racer, tested positive for anabolic steroid drostanolone metabolite, a performance-enhancing drug.<br><br>However, The Indian Express also quoted Kumar denying the allegations, 'Agar maine dope liya hota toh mai final me aata hi nahi. (Had I taken any performance-enhancing drugs, I would have fled like the rest). I have never taken any drugs&hellip; I feel some coaches are involved in framing me.'<br><br>The athlete went on to say that he cannot afford another test to prove his innocence and neither does he have any proof to present to the anti-doping agency.</p>

<p>Former Australia left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson's criticism of David Warner hasn't gone down well with batter Usman Khawaja, who came out in strong defence of his opening partner, who is set to bid adieu to Test cricket at his home ground in Sydney in January next year.</p>
<p>In a column for 'The West Australian' newspaper, Johnson questioned Warner's inclusion in the 14-member squad for the three-match Test series against Pakistan starting in Perth on December 14.</p>
<p>Johnson wrote that Warner, 37, doesn't deserve a place in the squad going by his form or merit, and he has not taken full responsibility for his role in the 'sandpapergate' ball-tampering scandal in South Africa in 2018 for which he was banned for a year.</p>
<p>Khawaja backed Warner, his opening partner in Test cricket, and Steve Smith, who was the Australia captain during the infamous scandal.</p>
<p>"Warner and Smith are heroes in my mind," Khawaja told reporters on Monday.</p>
<p>"They missed a year of cricket through dark times. No one's perfect. Mitchell Johnson's not perfect.</p>
<p>"What they (Warner and Smith) have done for the game -- how they have grown the game -- far outweighs anything else they have done.</p>
<p>"To say Dave Warner or anyone else involved in sandpaper (gate) is not a hero... I strongly disagree because they have paid their dues. A year out of cricket is a long time," he added.</p>
<p>Khawaja also disagreed with Johnson's view that chairman of selectors George Bailey was too close to Warner.</p>
<p>"I'm not sure you can argue with that. (The criticism) is harsh," Khawaja said.</p>
<p>But former Australia Test captain Tim Paine feels Johnson had made some good observations about Warner's form.</p>
<p>"David hasn't been playing well and would other people be getting the run he's getting now? Probably not," Paine told SEN Radio.</p>
<p>"But in my opinion, he's (Warner) got credits in the bank because he is one of the all-time greats.</p>
<p>"I think you can read between the lines that (Johnson) and Davey don't get along."&nbsp;</p>

An Air Force corporal, who was preparing for the National Shooting Championships, lost his thumb in a bizarre explosion at Delhi's Karni Singh range.

<p>A national-level shooter partially lost his left thumb when the 10m air pistol cylinder he was filling with compressed air exploded at the Karni Singh Range.</p>
<p>The incident, which left everyone shocked, occurred on Saturday evening.</p>
<p>Pushpender Kumar, a corporal with the Indian Air Force, was training at the shooting range for the National Championships, currently underway in Bhopal when he suffered severe damage to his left thumb, which required immediate hospitalisation.</p>
<p>He is currently admitted to the Indian Army's R&amp;R hospital here.</p>
<p>A national coach told PTI on condition of anonymity that while Pushpender was filling compressed air into the pistol cylinder from the main cylinder, the incident happened.</p>
<p>Air pistols and air rifles have a sleek gas cylinder attached just below the barrel. When the shooter presses the trigger, the compressed gas in the cylinder is released, which hits a hammer inside the air gun, ejecting the lead pellet.</p>
<p>The air pistol's cylinder has to be filled after a certain number of shots with the help of a compressor or a portable cylinder.</p>
<p>Earlier, carbon dioxide used to be the preferred gas to fill the cylinders but with the advancement in technology, compressed air cylinders, which look like smaller versions of LPG cylinders, are used to fill the air pistol cylinders.</p>
<p>Pushpender belongs to the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh and, while he has not competed in internationally, he is a senior member of the IAF team.</p>
<p>He had lost his mother nearly a month back.</p>
<p>"We are hopeful Pushpender will make 90-95 per cent recovery post surgery," said the coach.</p>
<p>"Air pistol cylinders have to be replaced after a certain period of time and the gun manufacturers do it for free. Thankfully, Pushpender's shooting arm is safe." The coach added that he had not come across such an incident in his career "though (gun) vendors say such incidents do happen".</p>
<p>It is not known whether the air pistol was personal or belonged to the Air Force.</p>
<p>"It is sad that he will not be able to compete in the national championships currently underway in Bhopal. His mother had passed away some 15-20 days back. As far as I know, he has not played internationally. He usually trains at the Karni Singh range in Delhi," the coach added.</p>
<p>The coach said that international rifle shooter from Meerut, Ravi Kumar, who is also with the IAF, was with Pushpender at the Army hospital to take care of him.</p>
<p>Kumar, a World Cup bronze medallist, told PTI that Pushpender is doing well post surgery and should be released from hospital soon.</p>
<p>"He is doing fine and should be discharged in the next 2-3 days," said Kumar.</p>
<p>Another pistol coach at the Karni Singh range said that it is important that air pistol and rifle shooters replace their gun cylinders every 10 years or as directed by the weapon manufacturer.</p>
<p>"There is a possibility of a mishap if the refill cylinders are not replaced as directed by the manufacturers. I don't know the exact cause of the blast but one should not take it lightly as once the validity expires anything can happen," he said on condition of anonymity.</p>
<p>"Pushpender is a good shooter and I have known him for a long time. What I have been told is that he has undergone a major surgery. He is around 28-30 years old. Usually what happens is that the pressure gauge indicator on the air weapon's cylinder starts malfunctioning, giving incorrect reading. It leads to overfilling of the cylinder, which causes it to burst," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has instructed Jofra Archer to skip next year's Indian Premier League (IPL) in order to manage the injury-prone pacer's workload in the run-up to the 2024 T20 World Cup, according to a report.</p>
<p>Archer, who was bought by Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2022 IPL for a whopping INR 8 crore, was released by the franchise last week. His name doesn't figure in the list of players who have registered for the IPL auction, set to be held on December 19 in Dubai.</p>
<p>Archer, who has been plagued by multiple injuries, suffered a recurrence of his elbow stress fracture while playing for MI during the IPL in May. The 28-year-old Barbados-born cricketer hasn't played any professional cricket since then and also missed the ODI World Cup.</p>

<p>As per the report, he has signed a new two-year contract with the ECB and ahead of the T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States from June 4 next year, the board has "opted to take as much control over Archer as possible." Archer had briefly travelled to India for the World Cup but returned to the UK after less than a week due to elbow pain. ECB is hopeful that the pace spearhead will be a part of England's squad for the T20 World Cup "We take that bet with him that we want him back fit and able to play for England, because of the upside," former England opener and current managing director (men's cricket) Robert Key had said last month "You start looking at things like the Ashes in two years, the T20 World Cup&hellip; Jofra adds so much to that," he had said back then.</p>
<p>As many as 34 England players, including Harry Brook, Adil Rashid and Chris Woakes, have registered for the IPL auction.</p>
<p>While the likes of Moeen Ali, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Jason Roy, Mark Wood, Will Jacks and Reece Topley have been retained by their franchise.</p>
<p>Test skipper Ben Stokes, who is in rehab after undergoing surgery on his left knee, and Joe Root have both opted out of the cash-rich league.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indian swimmer Srihari Natraj&nbsp;officially punched&nbsp;his ticket to Tokyo&nbsp;on Wednesday after the sport's world governing body FINA approved his 'A&rsquo; standard qualification time in the men's 100m backstroke time trial at the Sette Colli Trophy in Rome.</p>
<p>Besides his time of 53.77 seconds being enough to achieve the 'A' mark for the Tokyo Games set at 53.85 seconds,&nbsp;Nataraj's feat was also a new national record.</p>
<p>Srihari joins Sajan Prakash as India's A qualification entry to Tokyo. Interestingly, it will be the first time when two Indian swimmers will take part in the Summer Games.</p>

<p>EPL sold its domestic TV rights to SKY Sports for a record $8.45B for the next four-year cycle and it is said to be the largest sports media rights deal ever concluded in Britain.</p>
<p>As per this deal, Sky Sports will broadcast a minimum of 215 matches per season, or up to 100 more than it does now, while TNT Sports, formerly known as BT Sport, will receive 52 games. As per reports, Amazon Prime did not bid for any matches in the upcoming cycle. Amazon Prime currently airs 20 matches per season through 2024&ndash;2025.</p>

<p>Only recently the Indian Premier League (IPL) had become the second-richest league in the world after Star Sports and Viacom 18 bagged the media rights in 2023 for five years.
