Amidst the COVID-19 lockdown, India's unemployment rate has fallen to 11.6% from what it was in April - 23.5%. Govindraj Ethiraj speaks to Mahesh Vyas, MD & CEO, Centre For Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) on revival of the Indian economy, how the rise in employment has happened, who got back the jobs and how. "From the 20 million jobs that came back in May 2020, most were daily wage labourers. The remaining were largely from the small businesses like small shops. But salary jobs did not come back. In fact, they deteriorated in May," says Mahesh Vyas.
