India's first Oscar winner Bhanu Athaiya dies in Mumbai

India's first Oscar winner Bhanu Athaiya passed away at her Mumbai residence on Thursday. Athaiya's daughter said her 91-year-old mother died after a prolonged illness. Athaiya won an Oscar for her work in the 1983 film 'Gandhi'. She also designed costumes for films like C.I.D, Pyaasa, Kagaz Ke Phool, Waqt, Raat Aur Din, Shikar, Guide, Teesri Manzil, Mera Saaya, Johny Mera Naam, Geeta Mera Naam, Agneepath, Ajooba, and 1942 – A Love Story.
