20 lakh cases & 50k deaths averted due to lockdown: govt

The doubling rate of Covid-19 cases in India was 3.4 days when lockdown started, it has now improved to 13.3 days currently, the govt's empowered group said on Friday. Current active Covid-19 cases are concentrated in a few states and cities. Around 80% of the cases are in five states and over 60% in 5 cities. Over 90% cases in 10 states and over 70% in 10 cities. The growth rate of cases witnessed a steady fall from April 3 when the lockdown was started. According to the govt, 20 lakh cases and 50,000 deaths were averted because of the early lockdown. 27 lakh tests have been conducted so far. Friday is the fourth day when India has done over one lakh tests in one day. As many as 85,442 of these were conducted in government labs and 18,287 in private labs.
