Satyajit Ray's sleuth Feluda detects coronavirus disease in an hour

An accurate and low-cost strip test that can detect the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) within one hour is expected to be available for the first phase of testing in four weeks. Called Feluda, the test is named after a fictional detective created by the late Satyajit Ray, although it is also an acronym for FNCAS9 Editor-Linked Uniform Detection Assay. The test uses CRISPR gene-editing technology to identify and target the genetic material of Sars-CoV2, the virus that causes Covid-19. Watch the video for more details.

A sudden loss of smell and taste could be a sign of mild coronavirus disease. Covid-19 symptoms include fever, dry cough, tiredness, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. Those with a sudden loss of smell must home-quarantine and get tested for coronavirus disease. Very few conditions lead to sudden amnosia, or the loss of smell and taste. It should be treated as a sign of coronavirus disease, especially by people who risk exposure at the frontlines, such as health workers. People with a sudden loss of smell are 10 times more likely to have Covid-19 than any other infection, according to a study by the University of California in San Diego. The effect was temporary and patients recovered taste and smell within a few weeks of infection. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Remdesivir: A new drug that boosts recovery from coronavirus

An antiviral drug remdesivir is the first successful treatment against coronavirus disease. US government-funded trial on 1,063 people found it boosted recovery in severely ill patients. Remdesivir is an experimental antiviral drug developed by the US pharma major Gilead Sciences. It&rsquo;s a pan-viral drugs developed against RNA viruses, Marburg and Ebola, but it was not successful. It was also investigated for action against all coronaviruses, including those that cause SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. The drug led to 30% fewer patients needing ventilation. Covid-19: Are immunity passports an option to exit lockdown?

Should governments start issuing 'immunity passports' to people who have recovered from Covid-19, as a major step towards reopening the economy? Hindustan Times' Sanchita Sharma looks at the pros and cons of this suggestion, in light of the World Health Organisation's opposition to the move. An immunity passport would be issued to those who have recovered from the disease and developed antibodies which may protect them from a second bout. Covid-19: Why a vaccine is likely by the end of 2020

Human safety trials of a coronavirus vaccine developed by Oxford University began on Thursday even as Indian company Serum Institute of India started work on making the vaccine locally so as to be ready in case the trial succeeds. The trial began in Oxford on Thursday, with the first two of 800 healthy volunteers recruited for the study being injected with a new vaccine, ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 . This is the sixth coronavirus vaccine to enter the first phase of clinical trials, raising hopes of an antidote against the virus that continues to ravage the world. If the trials are a success, scientists hope to have one million doses ready by September, and to dramatically scale up manufacturing after that.

Women to be inducted as pilots in Army’s aviation wing

The Indian Army has decided to induct women as pilots in its aviation wing and the first batch is likely to be admitted for training in July. Addressing a press conference ahead of Army Day on January 15, Chief of Army Staff Gen MM Naravane said he had issued instruction a month ago to induct women in the flying branch of the Army. As of now, women are allowed in air traffic control and ground duties in the Army aviation wing. &ldquo;The Adjutant General's branch, the Military Secretary branch and the Aviation Directorate have arrived at a consensus that women officers can be there in the flying branch for flying duties,&rdquo; the Army Chief said. &ldquo;The next course will start in July and women officers will definitely be admitted into it for pilot training. After one year's training they will be able to join frontline operations units for flying duties,&rdquo; he added.

‘Be serious’: Nitin Gadkari’s warning to people on Covid infection

Nitin Gadkari urged people not to take Covid infection lightly and said that people should follow all preventive measures. Speaking at the 18th edition of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, Gadkari said that people need to be serious and especially people above 60 years of age should be more careful about their health. &lsquo;Self confidence &amp; positivity is very important.
