The Health Ministry’s proposal to allow export of indigenous ventilators has been green lit. India can now not just manufacture ventilators in the country, but also export these machines. Production facilities have also scaled up over the last few months. A few big manufacturers who earlier produced somewhere between 50-100 ventilators in a month can now manufacture anywhere between 5,000 and 10,000 ventilators, say reports. The go ahead for export of ventilators come as the Covid-19 fatality rate continues to progressively decline. The current death rate of 2.15% means fewer number of active cases are on ventilators. The Director General of Foreign Trade or the DGFT had prohibited the export of ventilators in March to ensure domestic availability of the machines.
