In SC today, 144 pleas on Citizenship Amendment Act

Jan 22, 2020 11:15 IST

Three judges of Supreme Court on Wednesday will take up about 144 petitions that have been filed over the last few days, on the Citizenship Amendment Act that has led to protests in several parts of the country. While most of the pleas challenge the constitutional validity of the new law, some seek a declaration that the act is constitutional. The petitions first came up for a hearing before the top court on December 18, 2019 when the court issued notices to the centre and Attorney General KK Venugopal. The Centre subsequently filed a transfer petition seeking transfer of all CAA-related cases from high courts to the Supreme Court.
