Amid the widespread protests over the citizenship law and the National Register of Citizens, Opposition parties met to discuss the current political situation and chart out their strategy. The meeting called by the Congress was expected to be a show of strength, but West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati decided to stay away. The Aam Aadmi Party too skipped the meeting, ahead of Delhi elections next month. Other noteworthy exclusions were Samajwadi Party's Akhilesh Yadav and DMK's Stalin. Some reports said, the Shiv Sena, which is in alliance with the Congress in Maharashtra, had not received a formal invite for the meeting and hence could not attend.
