Huawei set for limited role in UK 5G networks

Jan 28, 2020 20:17 IST

The United Kingdom has given a green signal to Huawei to be used in its 5G networks, but has designated it as a 'high-risk vendor'. The Chinese telecom giant will banned from supplying kit to "sensitive parts" of the network, known as the core. Huawei has been banned from operating at sensitive sites such as nuclear and military facilities, and the share of its market will be capped at 35%. UK's decision comes amid steep pressure from the US to block the Chinese tech giant on the grounds of national security. But Beijing had warned the UK there could be "substantial" repercussions to trade and investment plans if Huawei is banned.
