According to a study by the United States' National Institute of Health, the novel coronavirus can live on surfaces like steel and hard plastic for up to 72 hours, similar to the previous SARS-CoV virus that had an outbreak in 2003. Reports state that since the novel coronavirus lasts on cardboard surfaces for 24 hours and 4 hours on copper, much like SARS, it can be assumed that the new virus can survive on glass surfaces like smartphone screens for up to 96 hours as well. However, in light of the Covid-19 pandemic, many smartphone manufacturers have published advice on how best to keep their devices sanitised, with most recommending the use of 70% isopropyl alcohol solution or disinfectant wipes.
