Indian cuisine goes heavy on local spices and our dishes are not just tasty but also loaded with many health benefits. Indian spices attract global trade and for good reason. Spices, in particular, have piqued the curiosity of many international and local researchers as well.  

Here are five such spices that scientists suggest may help you achieve your weight loss goals.  


A bright, yellow spice, turmeric is known for its antiseptic and medicinal properties. According to various studies, the curcumin in turmeric has been shown to boost fat loss, increase body heat and boost metabolism.


Known as the holiday spice, a little bit of cinnamon can go a long way. Research shows that cinnamon may help balance sugar, reduce hunger pangs and keep you full for longer. Add cinnamon to your spice rub and sprinkle a little over your coffee to reap its benefits.  


A natural diuretic, fennel seeds are also great for people trying to lose weight. Chewing on some fennel seeds after your meal can help keep your digestive health in check. 


The hot and spicy Cayenne pepper is rich in capsaicin. The chemical is known to have fat-burning properties and some studies also show that it may lower bad cholesterol levels. 


Cumin is a staple in many Indian curries. A 2015 study found that just one spoon of cumin powder helped burn up to three times more body fat amongst a group of overweight women. The spice is also rich in natural antioxidants and has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body.
