HIV, TB and malaria deaths could rise amid Covid-19 pandemic: study

Jul 15, 2020 20:11 IST

A predictive study published in The Lancet Global Health journal says that mortality from HIV, tuberculosis and malaria in poor and middle-income countries could surge due the Covid-19 pandemic as already weak health care systems face the increased strain. Researchers from Imperial College London claim that deaths from the three diseases could rise by as much as 10%, 20% and 36% respectively in the next five years. Interruption in supplies of the antiretroviral AIDS drugs taken by many would cause the worst impact on HIV patients. Overall, the pandemic will undo significant progress made against these diseases over the past two decades, said one of the study's authors.
