68-year-old Harekala Hajabba, a fruit seller from Karanataka is one of the 21 recipients of the Padma Shri award this year. For a decade now, Hajabba has been educating underprivileged children in his village of Newpadapu. He used his savings to set up a school in a mosque in his village back in 2000. Later, with the District Administration's support a new campus was built in 2008. Hajabba, who has never received formal education, shared that it was a chance encounter with foreign tourists that showed him what he lacked and taught him the importance of education. Hajabba hopes that the government will soon set up a Pre-University college in his village.
