In a big win for the Fadnavis government in Maharashtra, the Bombay High Court has upheld the Maratha reservation. The court has ruled that the reservation is valid but that the 16% share is 'not justifiable'. It has asked the state govt to bring down the quota in educational institutions to 12% and in govt jobs to 13%. The Maharashtra government, last year passed a bill which granted16% reservation to Marathas under the Socially and Educationally Backward Class category. But several petitions challenged this in court as it increased the reservation in Maharashtra from 52 to 68%, far beyond the 50% cap set by the Supreme Court.
