Washington-based noted think tank Freedom House has demoted India’s status as democracy from “free” to “partly free”. The NGO's latest report says rights and civil liberties “have been eroding since Narendra Modi became Prime Minister in 2014”. It specifically refers to attacks on Muslims, use of the sedition law, and the government’s coronavirus response including the lockdown. India had been rated as “free” in Freedom House’s reports for 2018, 2019 and 2020, though its scores on a scale of 100 had declined during this period from 77 to 71. In the latest report, India had a score of 67 out of 100.
