Guru Purnima 2021: Know the history and significance of this auspicious day

Guru Purnima is the day when disciples pay tribute and express gratitude to their Gurus. As per the Hindu calendar, this auspicious day falls on the full moon day in the Ashadha month. This year it will be celebrated on 24th July.

Guru Purnima 2021: In the Hindu culture, Guru or teacher has always been revered as God. Guru Purnima is the day when disciples pay tribute and express gratitude to their gurus. As per the Hindu calendar, this auspicious day falls on the full moon day in the Ashadha month. This year it will be celebrated on 24th July.

Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima as it marks the birthday of the sage Ved Vyasa who is the author of the Mahabharata. This is also the day when Lord Shiva, who is known as the Adi Guru, transmitted the knowledge of Yoga to the Saptarishis. It is also believed that on this day Lord Buddha delivered his very first sermon at Sarnath. All of these events make the day all the more sacred and auspicious.

On Guru Purnima people offer prayers and seek blessings from their Gods and Gurus. They also worship Lord Vishnu, visit temples, observe a fast during the day and donate to the needy. But with the Covid-19 lockdown and restrictions in place, visiting the temple or your gurus will not be possible. What you can do instead is offer prayers at home, listen to online Satsangs and organise virtual meets to thank your teachers and gurus.
