Govt plans to release hundreds of prisoners on Oct 2

Sep 29, 2019 19:46 IST

Several hundred prisoners, who have not been convicted for murder, rape and corruption, will be released from jails across India on October 2. This is part of the government's special amnesty scheme to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The number of prisoners to be released on Gandhi Jayanti could be around 600 and the final list is being prepared by the Union Home Ministry. Those who will probably make it to the list include women convicts over 55 years, male convicts over 60 years and have completed half their sentence.
