Govt authorises PG students of Ayurveda to perform surgeries

Nov 22, 2020 18:17 IST

Central Council of Indian medicine, a statutory body under the AYUSH ministry issued a notification on Sunday, listing 39 surgical procedures which can now be performed by postgraduate practitioners of only shalya and shalakya streams of Ayurveda. The student of these streams will be trained to perform surgical procedures such as gangrene amputation, excision of benign tumors, cataract and nasal surgeries. The govt amended the Indian Medicine Central Council Regulation, 2016 to include 19 procedures involving the eye, ear, nose, and throat. While these surgeries were being already performed in the Ayurveda Institutes, Chairman of Board of Governors, CCIM, Vaidya Jayant Devpujari clarified that it is now legalised and the notification also sets a boundary for the practitioners to perform authorised set of surgeries.
