Global food system emissions putting Paris climate deal 'out of reach'

Nov 06, 2020 12:58 IST

Carbon emissions from global food systems are enough to make the goals of the Paris Climate Deal unattainable, according to a new study published in the journal Science. Between 2012 to 2017, food systems across the globe produced approximately 16bn tonnes of CO2 a year. If carbon emissions from the food industry continue at the current rate, they would be enough to increase global temperatures by more than 1.5C by the 2060s. A number of factors including dietary changes and food waste are responsible for this spike in emissions.
