The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has directed commissioners in all states as well as Union Territories to ensure that banned substances for artificial ripening of fruits are not used. These substances include calcium carbide and acetylene gas. They pose a serious threat to the health of consumers. FSSAI has set a maximum limit for the use of ethylene and has urged for the need to conduct regular awareness programs.
