Cool winds and pouring rains are synonymous with delicious snacks and good vibes. But as beautiful as the monsoon rains may look, the weather also brings with it a hoard of diseases like dengue, malaria, diarrhoea and of course, common cold and flu.

WATCH MORE Food items that we should say a big no-no to during the monsoon season

India’s primary food regulatory body, the Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said in a tweet that the risk for food-borne and other illnesses is much higher during the monsoons and shared some tips to stay fit and healthy!

Here are FSSAI’s top tips:

  • Wash all food items thoroughly before cooking them
  • Be extra vigilant about keeping yourself and your surroundings clean
  • Cook only the amount of food that you can consume right away and eat only freshly prepared meals
  • Refrigerate any leftover food as soon as possible to avoid microbial growth. When eating leftovers, always warm them before consumption
  • Milk, curd and other perishable food items should be stored in a refrigerator at all times
  • Improve your immunity by adding spices such as black pepper, garlic, ginger, cumin seeds, coriander seeds and turmeric powder to your regular diet. These wonder ingredients help your body defend itself against pesky monsoon diseases
