FSSAI proposes to restrict use of 'milk' label to dairy products only

Sep 03, 2020 12:41 IST

Plant-based sources of milk, like soy milk or almond milk may no longer be available to consumers under the generic term 'milk'. India's apex food safety regulator, the Food Safety and Standars Authority of India or the FSSAI, has said that products offered as alternatives to milk should not use the term 'milk' if they are derived from non-dairy sources. FSSAI has issued a draft notification proposing to change the current nomenclature. The move however, has drawn ire from animal rights activists including BJP MP Maneka Gandhi, who called the move 'unreasonable'. She said it would impact the trade of plant-based milk and deceive consumers. FSSAI has asked citizens and stakeholders for comments, and the final call will be taken after the 18th of September.
