Researchers at IIT Kharagpur have created food packaging material from cucumber peels as an alternative to plastic. The biodegradable packaging makes use of cellulose content, called cellulose nanocrystals from these peels. Packaging material made from this was found to have low oxygen permeability, scientists found. They also added that the packaging is light-weight, has a high surface area to volume ratio and great mechanical properties. The non toxic material, they claim, has no adverse effects on the environment.
