The truth about black tea: should you have it?

Oct 12, 2020 18:49 IST

When it comes to health-friendly teas, black tea is not mentioned as frequently as buzzworthy teas like green, white or jasmine. However, black tea, too, has plenty of research-backed benefits to offer!

Did you know that all tea actually comes from the same plant? The difference comes from the way it is harvested and processed. The main differentiator for black tea is oxidation. This is perhaps why there are some benefits unique to black tea.

Black tea is rich in polyphenols, a type of antioxidants that help block DNA damage associated with tobacco or other toxic chemicals. Antioxidants also help combat free radicals which are formed in the body due to both natural processes and environmental pressures.

Some research also suggests that it may prevent clogged arteries and lower the risk of cardiovascular disease.

While you may already know this but even studies have confirmed that the amino acids in black tea help you relax and concentrate better. But be careful, consuming high amounts of black tea or combining it with other caffeine-rich products may cause anxiety, sleeplessness, faster breathing among other things.

Have your healthy dose of black tea with a dash of lemon or mint. Use it to cook rice, beans or for poaching meats. Last but not the least, you can make some yummy desserts with the tea liquid as well!
