FDA approves ingredient for 'bleeding' plant-based burgers

Aug 01, 2019 19:08 IST

The US Food & Drug Administration has approved a key ingredient in Impossible Food' plant-based burger patties. In a statement, FDA said that the soy leghemoglobin, a protein-based color additive that Impossible Food uses to make its beef imitation burgers look and “bleed” like real meat, is safe for use. The California-based food giant sells its burgers across fast food restaurants in US and few countries in Asia, and plans to launch the plant-based burger's uncooked patty in select retail stores in September.
