Farmers stay put at Delhi-UP border, excess force withdrawn

Jan 29, 2021 07:15 IST

Defying the UP govt diktat to clear the protest site, hundreds of protesting farmers have stayed put at the Delhi-UP border with more pouring in from western Uttar Pradesh in the night on the call of Rakesh Tikait of Bharatiya Kisan Union. Tension built up at Delhi-Meerut expressway as UP administration brought in extra force and asked the farmers to leave. The expressway was barricaded from both sides leading to massive traffic jams. Later in the night, the administration removed excess force from the dharna site as an emotional Rakesh Tikait demanded action against police personnel who ordered lathicharge on the farmers.
"Excess security force from the protest site has been withdrawn and only a minimal deployment of personnel remains there," a Ghaziabad police officer told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
