After four consecutive days of reporting over 68,000 new coronavirus cases, India saw a drop in daily cases on Sunday and Monday. While 61,408 fresh infections were reported on Sunday, 60,975 new cases were reported on Monday. The drop in daily numbers is being attributed to the 'weekend effect'. The number of tests conducted on weekends is less than the tests done on weekdays which leads to fewer cases being reported. The drop in the cases is most visible on Mondays. After reaching a high of over 10 lakh tests on Friday, only 8.01 lakh Covid-19 tests were conducted on Saturday and 6.09 lakh on Sunday. The numbers of tests conducted on Monday shot up to 9.25 lakh which is also likely to cause an increase in new cases that are reported.
