EU sanctions Chinese, Russian hackers over alleged cyberattacks

Jul 31, 2020 13:34 IST

The European Union has imposed its first sanctions against China, Russia, and North Korea for alleged cyberattacks in the past. The measures involve travel restrictions and asset freeze against six individuals and three companies, which includes Russia's GRU military intelligence agency. European citizens and businesses have also been prohibited to engage in any transaction with these entities. The two sanctioned Chinese nationals were accused of involvement in Operation Cloud Hopper, North Korea for WannaCry and Russia for the NotPetya ransomware as well as for an attempted cyber-attack on the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in the Netherlands.
