Manisha Ropeta is making heads turn not only because she is among the few female officers in authoritative positions in Sindh Police but also for the fact that the 26-year-old is the first woman from the minority Hindu community in Pakistan to become a Deputy Superintendent of Police.
In Pakistan’s male-dominated society and culture, it is difficult for women to join professions considered “manly” such as the police force.
“From childhood, I and my sisters have seen the same old system of patriarchy where girls are told if they want to get educated and work it can only be as teachers or doctors,” Ropeta from Sindh’s Jacobabad area says.
Belonging to a middle-class family from Jacobabad in interior Sindh province, Ropeta says she wants to end this sentiment that girls from good families shouldn’t have anything to do with the police or district courts.
“Women are the most oppressed and the target of many crimes in our society and I joined the police because I feel we need ‘protector’ women in our society,” she says.
Ropeta, who is currently under training, will be posted in the crime-prone area of Lyari.
 
She feels that working as a senior police officer really empowers women and gives them authority.
“I want to lead a feminisation drive and encourage gender equality in the police force. I myself have always been very inspired and attracted to the police work,” the DSP says.
Her three other sisters are all doctors and her youngest brother is also studying medicine.
Asked what prompted her to choose a different profession, Ropeta says she had failed by one mark to clear her MBBS entrance examinations. “I then told my family I was taking a degree in physical therapy but at the same time I prepared for the Sindh Public Services Commission examinations and I passed that getting 16th position among 468 candidates.” Ropeta’s father was a trader in Jacobabad. He passed away when she was 13 after which her mother brought her children to Karachi and raised them.
She admits though it is not easy to be in a senior position in Sindh Police and to get on field training in a place like Lyari, her colleagues, superiors and juniors treat her with respect for her views and hard work.
Ropeta recalls that in her hometown it was not a usual practice for girls to pursue higher education and even when her relatives came to know she was joining the police force they said she wouldn’t last for long as it is a tough profession.
“So far I have proven them wrong,” she says.
Ropeta is hopeful of playing a big role in portraying a better image of the police whom many people still don’t trust and thus don’t report crimes.

A humpback whale landed on the bow of a small boat, surprising those who saw the massive creature slam the 19-foot vessel.
Town officials say the boat operator reported no injuries and no major damage that affected the seaworthiness of the vessel following the Sunday morning incident.
Humpback whales can grow up to 62-feet long and weight up to 53 tons.
They are popular with whale watchers because of their acrobatic displays – including spectacular breachings capable of launching their school bus-sized bodies entirely out of the water and slapping the surface with their pectoral fins or tails.
At the time of Sunday's incident, several boats were around the whale in Plymouth.
Video footage from the scene shows the animal launching its body out of the water and its head slamming onto the front of a nearby boat, tipping the rear of the vessel out of the water as it slid back into the Atlantic Ocean.
The Plymouth Harbormaster these kinds of incidents are rare, but they can still be dangerous for both boaters and whales.
The harbormaster recommends that boaters stay at least 100 yards away from humpback whales to minimize such incidents.

Frontman Jeff Gorman said Newport's "Bike Stage" is the first time the system has been tried at a festival.About a dozen artists are scheduled to perform mostly acoustic sets on the stage.
Just under 2,000 of the festival's 10,000 fans ride bicycles to Newport each year and Gorman said when he saw that sea of bikes during the band's appearance in Newport in 2019, he and partner Jake Cochran approached festival director Jay Sweet about setting up the stage.
The stage is equipped with solar panels that will provide most of the power to the amps and other equipment, with the bikes providing the rest.
When the show begins, fans jump onto six collapsible bicycles adjacent to the stage.
The pedaling generates electricity, which is fed through through wires to an electrical box on the stage.
Fans take turns pedaling for about five minutes during the 20-minute sets and in exchange geta free iced tea and a front-row view of the performance.

An individual by the name of Saptarshi Prakash tweeted a picture of the papers he needed to obtain a Schengen visa, Twitter users were perplexed. 
In the caption, he wrote, “Applying for a tourist visa to one of the most developed countries of the world. This is the amount of paper I am supposed to carry to prove that I have the money to stay there and come back." The image shows a massive bundle of paperwork, which seems to be unending.
In a follow-up tweet, he said the documents he attached were bank statements, 3 years of Income tax returns, and payslips among other things.
Since uploaded, the image has gone viral and managed to gather over 4K likes.
The amount of documentation astonished users of the internet. Others referred to it as a book manuscript, while some made the comparison to a PhD thesis.

Have you ever applied for a Schengen visa? If not, then maybe you would think twice after seeing this picture!&nbsp;
An individual by the name of Saptarshi Prakash tweeted a picture of the papers he needed to obtain a Schengen visa, Twitter users were perplexed.&nbsp;
In the caption, he wrote, &ldquo;Applying for a tourist visa to one of the most developed countries of the world. This is the amount of paper I am supposed to carry to prove that I have the money to stay there and come back." The image shows a massive bundle of paperwork, which seems to be unending.
In a follow-up tweet, he said the documents he attached were bank statements, 3 years of Income tax returns, and payslips among other things.
Since uploaded, the image has gone viral and managed to gather over 4K likes.
The amount of documentation astonished users of the internet. Others referred to it as a book manuscript, while some made the comparison to a PhD thesis.

A health center and a number of homes are located a mere 600 meters (2,000 feet) from the rim of the hole.
Candelaria's administrative director Karina Briño said the company had "no idea" what had caused the sinkhole to open.
The interim director for Chile's National Geological and Mining Service, David Montenegro, said his offices would look in to the matter to provide residents with some answers and reassurance.

A TikTok account going by the name 'Robot Overloads' shared daunting images of hollow faces staring right into the camera with plumes of smoke rising from burning, dilapidated buildings in the background.
The faces looking eerily similar to burnt human skeletons are also seen operating smartphones in some of the images to take selfies.
The TikTok account often posts images generated by AI upon user prompts. This series of images, too, was created by the AI after multiple requests from various users, a Twitter user said. Users on the social media platform had mixed reactions for the unsettling images. While a few stated that after looking at these photographs they wouldn't be able to sleep peacefully others on the other hand joked that at least the camera quality was good. Conspiracy theorists among users raised suspicions that perhaps the pictures belong to another planet adding that background in all the photos are same just picturised from different angles. Be what may, the images of hollow faces with explosions, burning buildings in the background portray a sense of dystopia often depicted in end-of-the-world movies.
The AI also managed to capture fixation for smartphones and selfies as the world literally ends.
