Eerie sights: a time lapse of Rome's empty streets

Mar 24, 2020 12:16 IST

Rome lay empty on Monday as a government-ordered shutdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus, under which all non-essential movements are banned and shops and parks are closed, continues. Rome's majestic monuments and picturesque streets usually crowded with tourists, are almost deserted. More than 375,000 people worldwide have been infected and over 16,000 have died from the virus, according to a running tally kept by Johns Hopkins University.
