Ecological disaster: Dead dolphins wash ashore in Mauritius

Aug 28, 2020 11:15 IST

In what is being dubbed as an ecological disaster, at least 17 dead dolphins washed ashore on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, where a Japanese ship MV Wakashio ran aground last month and spilled over 1000 tons of fuel. Environmental groups also noted that there are other dolphins stranded on the shore that appear to be seriously ill. Greenpeace has asked for an investigation into the matter as it is not clear what caused the deaths. The carcasses have been sent for post-mortem. Preliminary autopsy on two dolphins released on Thursday stated that the bodies had wounds in them but no traces of oil.
