Earth's magnetic field weaking; satellites, spacecraft malfunction

May 22, 2020 17:46 IST

In a shocking discovery, scientists have revealed that the Earth's magnetic field, which protects us from cosmic radiation and harmful particles of the sun, is weakening. The weakening has been observed in a large region between Africa and South America and scientists think that the Earth could be heading towards a pole reversal. This is a phenomenon where the north and south poles switch places, which last occurred 780,000 years ago. On average, these reversals take place roughly every 250,000 years. The discovery has been made by a European Space Agency team who say that this is causing satellites and spacecraft passing through that area to malfunction but it may not have any effect on people on the ground.
