Drones capture Greenland ice sheets fracturing in real time

Dec 04, 2019 15:53 IST

A team of scientists used a drone to capture the rapid fracturing and draining of a lake on the Greenland ice sheet, a phenomenon that could become more frequent as a result of climate change. The process is difficult to capture, but the group of glaciologists from the Scott Polar Institute at the University of Cambridge were fortunate when they arrived at the Store Glacier in northwest Greenland in July 2018. Aerial photography captured by the drone from before and after shows a dark blue oval shrinking into a smaller, shallower and lighter blue circle.
