Delhi court sends bookie Sanjeev Chawla to 12 day police custody

Feb 13, 2020 21:43 IST

Sanjeev Chawla, alleged bookie and key accused in one of cricket's biggest match-fixing scandals that involved former South African captain Hansie Cronje, was sent on Thursday to 12-day custodial interrogation by a Delhi court. Delhi Police sought a 14-day custody stating that he has to be taken to various cities for a deeper probe but the demand was denied. The Government of India had assured the UK government that Chawla, a British national, will be given medical facilities and protection from intra-prison violence so he will be housed in a separate cell in Tihar Jail. Accompanied by a crime branch team from London, Chawla was extradited to India from the UK and reached Delhi on Thursday morning.
