The polar vortex that led to a deep freeze enveloping the US Midwest seems to be getting worse, forcing schools, offices and postal services to shut down. At least five people have reportedly to have been killed across several states as a direct result of the cold weather. The temperature in North Dakota dropped as low as -33°C. A state of emergency has been declared in Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois, as well as in the southern states of Alabama and Mississippi.

South Korea says the number of new coronavirus cases in the country has more than doubled in just one day. Officials reported 123 more coronavirus cases on Sunday, taking the nationwide total to 556. In a televised address, South Korean Prime Minister described the situation as grave. Many of the new cases are linked to a hospital and to a religious group near the south-eastern city of Daegu. Four patients in South Korea have died so far and there are fears that the numbers could rise.

A 17-day-old newborn diagnosed with coronavirus was treated and discharged from hospital on Friday, China's Central Television reported.&nbsp;She has become the youngest person to recover from the virus in Wuhan.&nbsp;When she was born on February 5, her mother was diagnosed with the disease and the baby was immediately sent to Wuhan Children's Hospital. CCTV said on February 9, the newborn tested positive for the virus and her CT image also showed features of the disease.&nbsp;

A video of two passengers who took extreme steps to avoid coronavirus infection has taken social media by storm. The passengers on board a flight in Australia&nbsp;wraped&nbsp;themselves in plastic sheets, clearly depicting how scared people are since the virus outbreak in December that has killed over 2,300 people so far. The scared passengers also used hoods and armholes along with face masks that has left many on social media in splits.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The World Health Organization has said the number of coronavirus cases with no clear link to China is a cause for concern, adding that the window of opportunity to contain the virus was narrowing. WHO chief's comments come after Iran announced four deaths of infected patients who had no link to China. Outside China over 1,152 cases of the virus have been confirmed in 26 countries, the biggest cluster of confirmed cases being in South Korea. The World Health organisation said the number of cases with no clear epidemiological link, such as travel history to or contact with a confirmed case is alarming.

Israel confirmed its first case of new coronavirus on Friday, in a citizen who flew home from Japan earlier this week after being quarantined on the stricken cruise ship Diamond Princess.&nbsp;A total of 15 Israelis were among the passengers quarantined on board the Diamond Princess, of whom 11 have flown home. The others all tested negative for the virus. The returning Israelis had all been placed in quarantine for 14 days at the Sheba Hospital in the central town of Tel Hashomer. The development comes after Australia also confirmed that two returnees from the cruise ship had tested positive for coronavirus.

The United States is preparing to sign a deal with the Taliban on February 29, building on an agreement on reducing violence across Afghanistan, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday. The partial truce will mark a historic step in more than 18 years of gruelling conflict in Afghanistan and would pave the way for a deal that could, ultimately, see the war end.&nbsp;Pompeo said that intra-Afghan negotiations would begin shortly after the February 29 signing, expected to take place in Doha.

China on Friday denied any delay in allowing a special Indian flight to the coronavirus-hit Wuhan city to deliver medical supplies and evacuate remaining Indians from there, saying the concerned departments of both the countries were in touch to finalise the schedule. India on February 17 announced that it will send Indian Air Force's largest plane C-17 Globemaster with medical supplies to Wuhan&nbsp;and bring back its nationals as well as citizens from all neighbouring countries who were still stuck there on the return flight. The plane was supposed to take off on Thursday but as of Friday afternoon it was still waiting for China's clearance, official sources told the Hindustan Times. This as the&nbsp;death toll in China rose to 2,236 with the overall confirmed infection cases climbing to 75,465.

Two Australians evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship have tested positive for coronavirus on their return home despite being cleared in Japan.&nbsp;Health officials in Canberra told AFP all 164 Australians who returned home earlier this week were tested for COVID-19 in Japan and returned negative results. But six evacuees have since been retested, and two -- described as an older person and a younger person -- were found to be infected. Australian officials stressed the discovery was &lsquo;not unexpected&rsquo;, given the continued spread of the disease on the Diamond Princess after testing began.&nbsp;

Pakistan will remain in the Financial Action Task Force's 'grey list' but has been given a sharp warning to deliver on the remaining 13 action points in the next four months or risk being blacklisted, say reports. The Paris-based terror funding watchdog, which reviewed reports from Pakistan on the action taken to curb terror financing by Imran Khan's govt at its plenary meet, reportedly found many gaps in Pakistan's deliverables on its 27-point pledge. Vietnamese authorities have charged seven people in connection with the deaths of 39 citizens, who were found dead in a refrigerated lorry in the UK's Essex county last year.&nbsp;The migrants, including two 15-year-olds, were found in the lorry on an industrial estate in Essex and were mostly from poor and rural areas of Vietnam's north-central provinces. Two people were&nbsp;killed&nbsp;and several others injured in a train accident in Australia. Police said the train travelling between Sydney and Melbourne train came off the tracks near Wallan, which is north of Melbourne, killing the train driver and the train pilot. There were 153 passengers on the train when the incident occurred.&nbsp;The cause of the derailment is not yet known.&nbsp;

China has touted a big drop in new virus infections as proof its epidemic control efforts are working, but the toll grew abroad with deaths in Japan and South Korea.&nbsp;Fatalities in China hit over 2200 as 114 more people died, but health officials reported the lowest number of new cases in nearly a month, including in hardest-hit Hubei province. The number of deaths outside mainland China climbed to 11.&nbsp;Japan's toll rose to three as a man and a woman in their 80s who had been aboard a quarantined cruise ship died. South Korea reported its first death, and the number of infections in the country nearly doubled Thursday to 104. Iran reported two deaths on Wednesday and three new cases Thursday. Deaths have previously been confirmed in France, the Philippines, Taiwan and Hong Kong.&nbsp;

Roger Stone, a longtime confidant of President Donald Trump, has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for obstructing a congressional investigation in a case that has sparked fears about presidential interference in the justice system. Soon after the Judge pronounced sentence, Trump publicly decried Stone's conviction as unfair and prominent Republican legislators gave tacit support for a pardon. But Trump said he wasn't ready to act just yet.
