MLAs who were given the cover include Ramesh Bornare, Mangesh Kudalkar, Sanjay Shirsat, Latabai Sonawane among others. The rebel camp's leader Eknath Shinde however, was not provided the higher security cover. 
The MLAs' families in Maharashtra will also avail the security benefits as it also entails house protection teams, according to officials.

The ruling Aam Aadmi Party was defeated in Punjab's Lok Sabha bypolls. AAP's candidate Gurmail Singh lost by a margin of 7,000 votes by Shiromani Akali Dal's (A) Simranjit Singh Mann on Sunday. 
The seat in contention was Sangrur that was vacated by current Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann after he was elected from Dhuri in this year's state polls. Counting of votes began on Sunday at 8 AM amid heavy security measures and results were declared at 2 PM. 
77-year-old Simranjit Singh Mann is the president of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar)-unrelated to the Shiromani Akali Dal led by the Badal clan. Meanwhile, AAP's candidate Gurmail Singh is the party's district-in-charge of Sangrur. 
Other candidates fielded for the Sangrur seat include Congress' former Dhuri MLA Dalvir Singh Gody, BJP's Kewal Dhillon and Akali Dal's Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana.
For Aam Aadmi Party winning this seat was a question of prestige and retaining its bastion while for the other parties it meant coming back from the heavy loss in this year's state elections.

Worli, traditionally a Shiv Sena bastion in Mumbai, is the assembly constituency represented by Aaditya Thackeray.
Addressing the party workers, the 30-year-old son of Shiv Sena president and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, also said there was no place for "traitors" in the party.
He made the statement amid the ongoing political crisis in Maharashtra that was triggered by senior minister Eknath Shinde's rebellion. Majority of party MLAs have sided with Shinde and they are currently camping at Guwahati in Assam, a BJP-ruled state. Shinde and his group have claimed that they are the "real Shiv Sena". Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the PM’s “mastery” in "entire distraction science" can't hide disasters such as an all-time high unemployment rate, a 30-year high wholesale price index, and devaluation of LIC by $17 billion.
Gandhi said that while Indians struggle, Modi is busy planning his next distraction.

A man allegedly tied the hands and legs of his Ghaziabad-based fashion blogger wife before pushing her off a building in Agra leading to 30-year-old Ritika Singh’s death.   Her husband Aakash Gautam and two others have been arrested. Gautam was angry over the woman staying with a friend at an apartment in Agra, and an argument between the two ended in the fatal incident.  Police said they received information that Ritika died after falling off the fourth floor of a building in the Nagla Mewati area. During the investigation, it was found that her husband came with his family members on Friday and an argument broke out, and she was eventually pushed off the building. Her family said Ritika had pursued a course in social media and blogging and began a fashion, lifestyle, and travel blogging account two years ago. She had amassed more than 44,000 followers on Instagram. She met Aakash in 2014 and the two got married. Her family alleged that he would live off her earnings and she had faced constant abuse. Tired of the abuse, she shifted from Firozabad and began living with her friend, whom she had met on Facebook, in a rented apartment.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday said that the government will keep reviewing the Agnipath military recruitment scheme annually and if any shortcomings and challenges emerge, then it will address them appropriately.
The defence minister said the scheme was finalised after around two years of extensive deliberations among key stakeholders and described the new model as "transformative".
The scheme, announced on June 14, seeks to recruit youths between the age bracket of 17-and-half years to 21 for only four years with a provision to retain 25 per cent of them for 15 more years. For 2022, the upper age limit has been extended to 23 years.
Several parts of India witnessed violent protests against the scheme with the agitators demanding its rollback as the new model does not provide a job guarantee to 75 per cent of the recruits.

The prohibitory orders issued by the city police under section 37 of the Mumbai Police (MP) Act in the first week of June, ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections, will continue to remain in place till July 10. It bans the assembly of five or more persons at one place.
A police official clarified that he had referred to the section 144 of the CrPc earlier in the day by mistake, but later clarified that the prohibitory orders are in place as per the section 37 of the Act.
On Saturday, cadres loyal to the Thackerays staged protests against the rebels by defacing their banners, hurling stones, and vandalising the office of an MLA in various parts of the state.

Officials of the special branch have been asked to monitor the social media platforms and take action against those persons who are found posting objectionable content, messages, videos, police said.
"The police personnel have been asked to ensure that the workers of political parties do not take law into hand, indulge in violence or damage public property. The officials have been asked to take stringent action against the violators," he said.
The police staff has also been asked to ensure that no objectionable banner and hoarding comes up anywhere, the official said.
The prohibitory order issued earlier this month by DCP Operations, prohibits the assembly of five of more persons in view of the likelihood of breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquility.
Apart from the assembly of five or more persons, it prohibits processions, use of loud speakers, musical band and bursting of crackers in any procession.
Mumbai police are already on high alert to avoid any untoward incidents in view of the current political developments, the police official said.
Police have deployed adequate security at various important places in the city, he said.

"The city police personnel have been asked to remain alert and maintain law and order situation in the city. They have been instructed to coordinate with the local leaders of political parties and get in advance the information related to their programmes, movement and deployment of bandobast during the meetings and political events," the official said.

Officials of the special branch have been asked to monitor the social media platforms and take action against those persons who are found posting objectionable content, messages, videos, police said.
"The police personnel have been asked to ensure that the workers of political parties do not take law into hand, indulge in violence or damage public property. The officials have been asked to take stringent action against the violators," he said.
The police staff has also been asked to ensure that no objectionable banner and hoarding comes up anywhere, the official said.
The prohibitory order issued earlier this month by DCP Operations, prohibits the assembly of five of more persons in view of the likelihood of breach of peace and disturbance of public tranquility.
Apart from the assembly of five or more persons, it prohibits processions, use of loud speakers, musical band and bursting of crackers in any procession.
Mumbai police are already on high alert to avoid any untoward incidents in view of the current political developments, the police official said.
Police have deployed adequate security at various important places in the city, he said.

In connection with the investigation of the case, a Vigilance team had come to the Popli's house and was present at the time of the incident, a neighbour and family friend told reporters.
On June 21, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau had arrested Popli for allegedly demanding one per cent commission as bribe for clearance of tenders for laying a sewerage pipeline at Nawanshahr.
An inconsolable Sanjay Popli's wife told reporters, "The Vigilance officials were pressuring us and they were even torturing my domestic help to give false statements in support of the case they have registered. My 27-year-old son is gone. He was a brilliant lawyer. They have snatched him".
"To build a false case, they snatched my son--Kartik Popli is gone," said Sanjay Popli's wife showing blood spots of her son on her hands.
"I want justice. I will move court," said the wailing woman, repeatedly crying "my son has been killed".
"(Punjab Chief Minister) Bhagwant Mann should answer," she said.
She said her husband Sanjay was due to appear before the court and a Vigilance team had visited their house.
"The Vigilance people took Kartik upstairs and when I went up they were mentally torturing my son," she said, while adding "even our mobile phones were snatched".
"My son has died...," she alleged.
A 51-year-old woman, a neighbour and family friend of Popli family, alleged that "Sanjay Popli was being pressured by the Vigilance that he should agree to the allegations levelled by them".
"Kartik Popli too was detained for hours," said the woman.

CCTV footages showed that Dhanbad judge&nbsp;Uttam Anand , was jogging on one side of a fairly wide road early on Wednesday when a heavy auto-rickshaw veered towards him, hit him from behind and fled the scene.

Shiv Sena minister Aaditya Thackeray on Sunday claimed that over a month ago, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had asked party leader Eknath Shinde whether he wants to become the chief minister, although the latter had sidestepped the issue then.
Aaditya, who is the son of Sena president and chief minister Thackeray, made this revelation while addressing party workers here.
Eknath Shinde, a senior Sena minister and prominent leader from Thane district, last week rebelled against the party. Majority of Sena MLAs have sided with him and all of them are currently camping in Guwahati. Their move has pushed the Sena-led government to the brink of collapse.
"On May 20, chief minister Uddhav Thackeray had called Eknath Shinde to 'Varsha' (CM's official residence) and asked whether he wants to become the chief minister. However, he had sidestepped the issue then. But a month later, on June 20, whatever had to happen, happened," Aaditya said while referring to Shinde's rebellion.
He should have demanded the post directly on the face instead of running away to Surat and Guwahati, the Worli MLA said.
Meanwhile, in his weekly column 'Rokhthok' published in the Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' on Sunday, Sena MP Sanjay Raut said, Shinde had a good chance of becoming the state chief minister had he continued in Shiv Sena.
"Shinde would have been the chief minister if the BJP hadn't gone back on its word of rotational chief minister's post. It is surprising that Shinde wants to go to BJP," Raut said.
The Shiv Sena and BJP had parted ways after the 2019 Assembly poll results following Sena's insistence that the two parties share the top post.
The Sena later joined hands with the NCP and Congress to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in Novermber 2019. Uddhav Thackeray assumed the top post after being asked to do so by NCP chief Sharad Pawar. Sanjay Raut has claimed that had the BJP accepted the Sena's offer for sharing the CM's post on rotational basis, then Uddhav Thackeray had Shinde in mind as the Sena’s choice for the post.

"We have learnt a lesson on whom to trust....These are the bodies whose souls have died. Their mind is dead....40 bodies will come from Assam and will be sent directly to the morgue for postmortem," Raut had said in an apparent reference to the number of MLAs camping in Guwahati with Shinde while addressing Sena cadres.

Amid the political tussle in Maharashtra, the Eknath Shinde rebel camp has approached the Supreme Court challenging the appointment of Ajay Choudhuri as the legislative party leader in the Assembly. Eknath Shinde was previously the Shiv Sena legislative party leader till he rebelled and was consequently removed from the post by the party. 
A no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Narwari Zirhal that was rejected has also been challenged by the Shinde camp in the Supreme Court. Further, the camp has urged the SC to order the Deputy Speaker to not take any action over their disqualification till his removal is decided.
Devdutt Kamat, the legal advisor-cum-counsel for Shiv Sena, said, 'The Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly has full powers to adjudicate in the absence of the Speaker- the post is lying vacant.'
A day earlier, the Maharashtra legislature secretariat had issued 'summons' to 16 rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, including senior minister Eknath Shinde, seeking written replies by the evening of June 27 to the complaints seeking their disqualification. 
Claiming that the disqualification notices were illegal unless done for matters pertaining to the Assembly, the camp said that they were not valid for not attending a party meeting. 
Kamat said that disqualification proceedings have been initiated against 16 rebel MLAs as per para 2.1.A of the 10th schedule of the Constitution.
'Several verdicts of the Supreme Court had shown that actions of legislators outside the House amount to the anti-party activity and they are liable to be disqualified. They haven't responded to the party directives to attend meetings convened,' he said. When asked about the options available for the dissident group of MLAs, Kamat said disqualification applies to them until they merge with another political outfit.
The rebels, however, have denied merging with any other party, including the BJP. 
The Shinde camp plea further alleges that in 2019 when Shinde was appointed the legislative party leader, all 55 MLAs of Shiv Sena were present. However, for his removal, not even 35 percent MLAs were in the Assembly so it stands invalid, the plea stated. 
The Supreme Court will hear the Shinde camp plea on Monday as it has been listed for urgent hearing. A copy of the plea has also been sent to the Maharashtra government. 
The Shiv Sena national executive on Saturday authorised Uddhav Thackeray to take action against the rebel MLAs. Other than that sources close to the party claim that portfolios of Eknath Shinde, Gulabrao Patil and Dada Bhuse will be taken from them. On Sunday, Uday Samant, the higher and technical education minister also joined the rebel faction in Guwahati becoming the ninth minister of the MVA government to do so.

A no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Narwari Zirhal that was rejected has also been challenged by the Shinde camp in the Supreme Court. Further, the camp has urged the SC to order the Deputy Speaker to not take any action over their disqualification till his removal is decided.
The Shinde camp has also challegend the appointment of Ajay Choudhuri as the legislative party leader in the Assembly. Eknath Shinde was the Shiv Sena legislative party leader till he rebelled and was consequently removed from the post by the party.&nbsp;
The Supreme Court will hear the Shinde camp plea on Monday as it has been listed for urgent hearing. A copy of the plea has also been sent to the Maharashtra government.&nbsp;
Devdutt Kamat, the legal advisor-cum-counsel for Shiv Sena, said, 'The Deputy Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly has full powers to adjudicate in the absence of the Speaker- the post is lying vacant.'
A day earlier, the Maharashtra legislature secretariat had issued 'summons' to 16 rebel Shiv Sena MLAs, including senior minister Eknath Shinde, seeking written replies by the evening of June 27 to the complaints seeking their disqualification.&nbsp;

Claiming that the disqualification notices were illegal unless done for matters pertaining to the Assembly, the camp said that they were not valid for not attending a party meeting.&nbsp;
Kamat said that disqualification proceedings have been initiated against 16 rebel MLAs as per para 2.1.A of the 10th schedule of the Constitution.
'Several verdicts of the Supreme Court had shown that actions of legislators outside the House amount to the anti-party activity and they are liable to be disqualified. They haven't responded to the party directives to attend meetings convened,' he said. When asked about the options available for the dissident group of MLAs, Kamat said disqualification applies to them until they merge with another political outfit.
The rebels, however, have denied merging with any other party, including the BJP.&nbsp;
The Shinde camp plea further alleges that in 2019 when Shinde was appointed the legislative party leader, all 55 MLAs of Shiv Sena were present. However, for his removal, not even 35 percent MLAs were in the Assembly so it stands invalid, the plea stated.&nbsp;
The Shiv Sena national executive on Saturday authorised Uddhav Thackeray to take action against the rebel MLAs. Other than that sources close to the party claim that portfolios of Eknath Shinde, Gulabrao Patil and Dada Bhuse will be taken from them. On Sunday, Uday Samant, the higher and technical education minister also joined the rebel faction in Guwahati becoming the ninth minister of the MVA government to do so.&nbsp;
