Dalit labour activist Nodeep Kaur was released from prison on Friday after she was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Kaur was arrested in January by the Haryana Police under charges of extortion and attempt to murder.
The 23-year-old labourer and trade union activist was in jail since January 12. Her sister had also alleged that Nodeep was beaten and sexually assaulted in custody.
In her petition, Kaur, a member of the Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan, claimed she was “targeted and falsely implicated” in the case as she was successful in generating massive support for the ongoing farmer movement against the Centre’s three new farm laws.
The court had earlier asked the Haryana govt to explain the complaint filed against Kaur. Her case gained international focus after US vice president Kamala Harris' niece Meena Harris tweeted about it.
